Re: have original 1962 VIN tag..help

I have done survey/research on the 1962 VIN tag for the purpose of determining the placement location of the identification line on the tag in relation to the car's build date time on the assembly line, which varies considerably throughout the model year. I have done this for 13 years and have acquired information from 613 cars thanks to owners willing to share information. 60 of these cars have either a missing VIN tag, or have a reproduction/replacement tag. I have not come across the '62 Corvette VIN sequence #12709 that you are looking for. It's a good guess if the car is still out there somewhere or gone to Corvette heaven, not all Corvette owners are NCRS members. Could even be in a barn awaiting discovery by someone who would cherish it and bring it back to life.

Do you still live in Florissant?

Bill Lacy lives on Albert drive over near Koch park. He may be able to steer you in the right direction..He should be in the phone book and is a member on this board.

Or PM me and I will give you his contact.

I lived in Florissant for about 17 years myself.

You might write a letter to the missouri DMV to trace the car. Bill will probably have the address if you need it. Chances are they will respond asking the purpose and require a form to be filled out. I know it is a hassle..but the owner of the car would sure benefit by getting the tag.

Who knows..you might end up getting the car back.

I'd make him produce a valid title before I would even think about sending it to him. Pandora's box would be tame compared to what you could get yourself into.

i've had the VIN tag for 47 years....i'm not in a hurry to part with it.....just want to get it back home where it belongs if the original car still exists....it's not for sale....i talked to some nice people at the NCRS booth at barrett-jackson booth in Phoenix and they suggested using the the NCRS forum....feels good to hear from people who understand. and care.

i'd also insist the california guy wanting the vin tag send a tracing of the frame's vin# before parting with the original vin tag.mike

i was suspicious of the california reply since he didn't use the forum to reply but an email....he did use NCRS id #29688....i could be wrong but i'm just being cautious.

                      Jerry,
I'm sorry you were suspicious of my reply by email. I have been a member of NCRS since 1997 and have owned several classic corvettes. My 1962 has a state issued vin. I have not taken the body off so reading the vin off of the frame is very difficult but as I said what numbers I can read look very close to your tag. I had a master Judge try help me read the tag. I'm not trying to scam you. How did you sell your 62 with out the vin tag?
                      Sorry for being negitive.

                        Jerry,
To follow up after I calmed down.
In flight judging a state issued vin is not a point loser in fact it helps because a judge can't say that's not correct because it's a late car or an early car. As a NCRS corvette restorer getting as close to original is the objective. The car has been registered in California for the last 10 years with the Georgia State issued tag and an unkown number of years in Georgia. I used direct email because it is easier to comunicate. I assume thats why its possible on the TBD

Hi John-What does "place. loc. of the id line on the tag in rel. to the car's build date time on the assy. line" mean? It's interesting to me because I'm the 3'rd owner of an original '62. Thanks-E.J.

the original car had a clear state of Illinois title when i traded it in for the 1968 cougar....is the engine block original with corredt VIN number ?...how about the original heads.....i realize that restoration can hide many sins but there are things that i know about that car that could prove it's originallity....if you would like to deliniate things that you know about the car.....you can revert back to sending emails ...so as to not bother the forum....i apoligize for being cautious....but like i said.....i only want to return the VIN to the original car

Jerry, this is a real long shot but I know of a local 62 with a missing VIN tag. We are located in Macomb IL about 160 miles north of St. Louis. The lady that owns the 62 now has owned it for 30 years or so. I have looked at the car but not real close. The car is yellow now. It was painted at our shop in the mid 70's. Still has that old paint. Not origianl motor now. I could put you in contact with the current owner or her bother who is an old car guy. Just thought I should reply since I know of a 62 without a VIN tag and we are close to MO. Send me an email and I will get you the phone # of the current owner of this 62. Jeff
