1970 LT1 Throttle Cable Bracket #3972627 on Carb.

    Hello:

Redoing a 1970 LT1; believe the above part number is correct. Can someone tell me what the original color/finish is suppose to be? I was
once told it came with a Magnesium Phosphate finish; is this correct?

    Thanks; Larry

Gray oxide. The one with the sparkles, just like the hood latches. Mag oxide might be the correct terminology from the platers point of view, but Parkerizing (which is a trademarked process) will give the same result.

          Terry,

Manganese phosphate is generally black with a more crystalline appearance, whereas zinc phosphate is generally a more gray with a flat appearance. There is no such thing as "gray oxide." There is "black oxide" however.
Color and appearance of phosphating will depend on the underlying metal. For some pictures which show the color and the variability, look here:

Based on my home plating (just did another batch yesterday) and Joe's picture, I would guess that the part is zinc oxide as it definitely looks gray - which in my experience would be the zinc.
I have never had a batch look quite as gray as that part, as I've only done manganese. Mine always turn out quite black, and my latest batches are very "sparkly."
My friend's 70 appears to have zinc oxide on the female hood latches on his hood, but manganese phosphate on the base of the male latches on the firewall.
They were a beautiful example of color - until he took them off and painted them semi gloss black.

          FYI, parkerizing = magnesium phosphate.
