    C2 Rear Problem - Part 2

    Hi Guys;

    For those of you who "coaxed" me to take down the rear again on my 1963 to replace the cracked rear cover... Thank You!

    I pulled the rear down yesterday and put the original cover back on my original carrier... We re ready to reinstall once I can get my hands on some posi additive.

    In the mean time I thought that you guys might get a kick out seeing what I was talking about... regarding the crack and the bad threads. I did contact Muskegon Brake and they will make good on the cover... stand up guys as always.

    Three pictures; the crack in the cover with a view of the "threads", a picture of the first bolt I had to muscle in there, and a picture of the original carrier ready to go back in there once I add the lube. Note, the original carrier is on one of those hydraulic motorcycle jacks which works extremely well when taking one of these rears down putting it back up.

    Thanks again!!

    Joel

    Nice job Joel, don't forget about the grade eight bolts on the crossmember.

      Remember also NOT to tighten those 4 bolts until the full weight of the car is back on the ground and the spring is compressed. Then, you only need to snug them up, do not overdo it.

        Joel -- when cleaning your rear cover, did you see any paint daub near the filler plug ?

        Pics are of 303 cover off my 4.56 original diff CF_1_3_64. First is of cover before cleaning (there's a patch of black paint barely visible on the top). Then when I cleaned it up, (2nd pic) this rather large swoosh of yellow paint was unearthed (un-grimed ?).

          Hi Wayne;

          Nope, I did not see any paint marks on the cover.... This cover appears to have been glass beaded some time ago and then refinished.... my guess is that anything which might have been there originally is long gone!

            With the cover off did you check to see which posi case you had? Original or replacement: Auburn or Eaton?

              Hi Gary;

              I know that it is a replacement... I've been told that before when I had it rebuilt/ratio changed. Honestly, I would not know one type from another at this point.

                Joel, do you have a picture with the cover off? if yes, please post it.

                Thanks

                  Harry;

                  Sorry I don't... didn't think to take a picture with the cover off.

                    Wayne -

                    Most likely applied at Warren, to alert the line operator at St. Louis that it was a Posi, so it would get the correct Posi diff lube (they left Warren dry).
