    Air Cleaner 2 X 4

How are the reproduction 2 X 4 air cleaners ? I need the un-sealed type which was used from mid 60 to 61.

I just ordered one from Paragon after searching for months even though it looks a bit shiny. Are the repros Aluminum like the originals ?

Has anyone had good luck restoring an original one ? Someone on this board mentioned using an instrument repair shop to fix hub cap dents so I was thinking I would try that if I find an original.

The only Corvette C1 air cleaner the was chromed steel was 53 to 55,56,and 57's. Aluminum ones were not shiny like this repro.the original aluminum looks like aluminum having no shine to them and many repro's used a brass ring to hold the inner pieces to gather where original's was spot welded
But many people like thier 's shinny

Mark, the repros are aluminum but there's some differences from an original. I know the spacing between the groups of fins is wider on the repros than the original. On the sealed variety the filter material is a bronze color rather than the silver color that originals had. There may also be a difference in the matting on the inside of the top. The originals had a weave surface. I'll take a look tonight and see. I have a sealed and non sealed repro and an original sealed unit.

I started to order a 2X4 air cleaner from Paragon, but the rep I was speaking with informed me that they had received some complaints about tooling marks on the cover of their air cleaner.

After discussing it, I choose not to order one. Now I don't know what to do.

        Regards,

        Dennis

A friend of mine has restored a couple of the original ones. He's a retired gentleman who loves to use his buffer and doesn't mind taking time to hammer out dents.

Bottom line is that he showed me a repro as well as his restored units. There are definite differences between them which should be easily discernable when judging. However, restoring one is either a) time consuming if you do it yourself, or b) expensive if you have to pay someone else for their time.
