My standard Parts book is dated 1979. Not sure but did anyone above actually say just when the "Standard parts Book" came into existence. What year???
Mike McKowan has an earlier one. Don't know if he chirps into here or not.
Hey RJ!!! What year is your Standard Parts Book??? I know it's early than 1979. Meanwhile seldom do I get much out of my book. I refer to the 63 aims and then look in the STB and don't get squat.

JD, didn't know the Standard Parts books existed since my parts book collection ends with 1962. Until Joe and someone else on the TDB mentioned them. Earliest I've found so far is 1977 and it's a GM version. A TDB member referred to them as P&A 24? Joe Lucia said he believes they started about 1969 when Group 8.9 was removed from the Parts Books. Interesting to note that in a 1985 version some of the 1957 AIM fasteners part numbers are listed, which were not listed in the earlier versions of the Standard Parts books. Gary....

The earliest Standard Parts Book that I have is May 1973, but I suspect Joe is right that they started as a separate book when that section was dropped from the big P & A book in late 1969 or 1970.

FWIW, my Rev 7-1-69 copy of the big P&A30 still has Gr 8.899 thru 8.991 [48 pages].

I've got a Nov 1971 Std Parts, but your bolt isn't listed; I also cannot find it in any of my five Parts History listing as being superseded or discontinued, which gives support to Joe's theory of producation only -for the life of me, I can't make sense of that, but .....

Mike, have some 122007 bolts from my 58 and 59 cars, the threaded part is 3/4" long, they are used to hold the vent handle under the dash. Mine have a 'T' on them.

The number of fastener part numbers used in PRODUCTION was absolutely HUGE. This is especially true for bolts and screws which had a mind-boggling number of lengths, material grade, finishes, etc. combinations. If GMSO had ever stocked all of these, then probably half of the entire GMSPO-available part numbers would have been fasteners.

To make matters worse, I'd say it was/is the extreme exception that anyone requiring a fastener for their GM vehicle, including mechanics at dealerships, would order such a fastener from GMSPO under a GM part number. I doubt that very many GM dealer parts counter guys would even use the Standard Parts Catalog for fasteners (some may not even have known about it). Instead, they would sell a customer a fastener out of their more-or-less generic bins OR they'd tell them to go to a hardware store.

Plus, dealers rarely stocked any of the Standard Fasteners. Can you imagine a dealership service department holding a car they were repairing until they received a GM part numbered bolt or nut which usually had to come out of the Flint or Lansing, MI parts warehouses?

The thing that absolutely amazes me is that GMSPO inventoried and had available as many fasteners as they did! It's hard to imagine that sales volume would have justified this.

My estimate is that probably less than 10% of the fasteners used in PRODUCTION were ever available in SERVICE. In fact, it was probably WAY LESS than 10%.
