I see each of your points but for every bonafide CE engine car (such as Jim Trekell's) there would be many more examples created simply by matching a CE engine from a junkyard to a car that is presently NOM. The 5 year GM warranty period gives a lot of leeway for casting dates and numbers in finding a suitable donor engine.

As such no history is being preserved, it is being created. If it were possible to document every case like Jim's car then I would be in complete agreement with you.

I think the most importand issue here is the fact that the "CE" number on the pad after about 1969 did not necessarily have anything to do with the cars warranty or in any way link that block to that car.
All new partial and complete engine assy's carried the CE info on the pad. Not just warranty replacement assy's.
If someone walked into a Chev dealer and ordered/purchased a new partial assy, it would have been stamped with the CE+number.

The only block assy's that weren't stamped CE, as I remember, were the "fitted blocks". That's a bare block with fitted pistons/rings and main bearings. Nothing else.

I agree, the CE would indicate that it was/is a Chevrolet block but we already know that. I can usually spot a Chev block from 10 feet or more.

I think that I may have struck a nerve with my comment...

"It's just sad that due to manufacturing mistakes (or whatever you would like to call them) many of our cars left the factory never having a chance to be a numbers matching car."...

but it was not intended to be a "blank" session that exites peoples emotions. There have been several posts siding with one side or another and I think that there are valid opinions on both.

If CE's would possibly be considered as "factory origional" there must be a criteria. Apparently Jim Trekell's car can be doumented. That would be great example to use as a guide in the future. Documntation of these engine changes should be a consideration.

But... earlier in this discussion, the idea that a person would seek out a CE with the correct casting # and correct date code could add to the mis-representation of our cars.
I think this... wouldn't it be easier for these types to find a correct casting with the correct date an just re-stamp it?

No matter which way (or no way for that matter) this goes, keep having fun with the cars we love!!

No CE car is factory original, documented or not.
