I'm experiencing this same problem in 3rd gear and would like to think I can rebuild the syncros myself. Are there and technical or how to articles out there showing step by step of removal and dissassembly and install of new parts. Pictures are good too.

Like some others here, I've been rebuilding Muncies since I started drag racing a 4 speed Chevelle in '72 (I don't want to even think about how many years, and T-10's started earlier with my '58 Corvette)) and the bottom line is adjust the linkage and make sure everything in the linkage and the arms on the side cover are tight. If you still have the problem, the trans will have to come out. Once out and disassembled, a person with experience in Muncies can easily find the source of your problem, replace parts as necessary and have you set for many more years of service. There are many posts in the archives regarding people who do a competent job of muncie trans service.

James, you can go to 5speeds.com and buy a rebuild kit and video. The owner (I think Steve Cangialosi) is also available on the telephone for technical assistance. I rebuilt my Muncie this way and it was a little time consuming but well worth the effort.

Corvette Magazine had an article a few issues back that explained step by step how to rebuild a 4 speed. It was very detailed with pictures. Good luck it appeared that you may need a press.

I did have all the gears, etc. pressed off off the mainshaft by a machine shop.

Years ago i had the same problem with my 65 L76 coupe 410 my problem was the shifter fork..
