Re: Distributor Cap for 63
Jeff, You need a D308 black cap. D308 has the hi towers. D310 has the low towers. Only FI used the low tower cap. As mentioned your cap should have Patent Pending Delco Remy on the top. NO R. Aluminum contacts. Some think these caps are rather dull in appearance but when new in the box they were quite shiny.
Also some find it necessary to zip off the R on a service replacement cap so as not to be hit hard on the judging floor.
All 63 to 65's used a black cap. You didn't ask but here is one for all of you. The 64-65 TI;s used a black cap. Not a brown cap. The brown caps were for L88 and trucks and also service replacements.
This D308 cap came out around 1955 on Olds and Buick, etc. John D- Top

Re: Distributor Cap for 63
original delco caps have a "ledge" on the rear vertical wall of the door jamb(the opening for the "door" that allows setting the points without removing the cap). BTW, the fellow that thought up the open door dist cap, Jim Kerr, had a garage here in cumberland in the early 50's. GM never compensated him for the invention. The current repo dist caps lack the ledge on the door jamb and its absence is easily felt by running youir finger along the door jamb. mike- Top

Re: Distributor Cap for 63
Also on the repro caps the Delco script is not as "pronounced".
Over the years it appears the molds became worn - the later caps with the patent numbers have a much less depth to the Delco script.
This seems to be what was copied for the current reproduction.
Compared to the early original caps it is very evident that the repro is being used.
Again - the repro feels different then an original.- Top

Re: Distributor Cap for 63
Jeffrey I have looked at a lot of Caps there are 5 308 caps that I have seen first
1. Patent Pending no R
2. Patent Number no R
3. Patent Pending R
4. Patent Number R
5. No script on top
That for the 308's for 309, 310 would have the same Patent procedure . For me that is what I think is true but other judges may see it different. From talking with a Patent Attorney he stated that the Pending would be for a limited time due to the patent office issuing a patent number for that item then that patent number would be installed till there was a change to the design which would start the whole process over again. Hope that helps Paul 18046- Top

Re: Distributor Cap for 63
Thinking something up, isn't where the rubber meets the road in science & engineering! You can't patent an IDEA...you need to submit a 'brass board' and demonstrate your proficiency in the field relative to existing current art (e.g. you understand and can control the technology).
The lift window feature of the distributor cap is part of US Patent No. 2,769,047 which was filed on 12/23/53 and granted on 10/30/56. The inventors are listed as: Herman L. Hartzell, David C. Redick, and Clarence L. Julian. There's no mention of James Kerr and nothing in the records of his having filed a legal contest of GM's intellectual property rights...- Top
