    1973 Carb Upgrade

Hello to all. New member here.
I have a 1973, 350 automatic with the stock Rochester in her. I was thinking of upgrading to a new Edelbrock Performance Carburetor. Any suggestions on if this is a win situation or any better ideas? Thanks!

Why? Your fuel pump-to-carb pipe won't work (it'll need some Bubba arrangement), nor will your factory automatic choke setup; what's the advantage you expect to see?

      GUY-

I agree with John, what's the gain? Properly cleaned, calibrated and adjusted you'll have a great factory piece that'll out perform the aftermatket parts anyway. Save your money and have a resto shop bring your factory carb up to snuff and enjoy.

John- You mean it'd look somethin' like this? (see attachment)

John: Thanks for the reply. New member, new owner and I was wondering if there was any advantage for performance, fuel efficiency, etc. If I won't see much of anything, I'll leave her alone. She runs just fine as it is. Thanks again for the advice. Guy

Martin: Will do. Looking forward to getting her back out in the sunshine on PCH here in CA.

I also have a 73. I've had several of them. Keep your money and the stock carb if it is running good. You won't notice much difference and the hassles you have plumbing it correctly will be a pain, as mentioned before.

Sure it can and has been done, but just the carb switch alone won't produce any drastic results that you'd be thrilled about.

              Tom and all:
Thanks and will do. Found a great shop up the freeway from here that clean, calibrate and adjust it back to life.
Glad to be a part of the NCRS. This was a great find and I'm looking forward to all the expert help out there. Waiting along time for my 73!!

                Gary,

I have a '73 L82. One of the easiest tests is to see if your secondarys are opening properly (a common problem).

Have someone press the gas pedal to the floor and verify that your throttle is opening fully, including full opening of the secondary throttle shaft. Make sure that the cable has adequate slack to allow the throttle to fully close. There is a bracket on the '73 where you can adjust the cable to the proper position (on the same piece that bolts the carb to the intake at the left rear). Mine was way too far aft in that bracket.

                Hope that helps,
                Chris
