    " Cash for Clunkers"

    The "Cash for Clunkers" may be included in the economic stimulus package proposed by Congress. I found this on a Mopar site and thought it would be of interest to the classic car community.

    Here is the link.

    Hello;

    Our beloved Corvettes and all collector cars will be under fire by the "global warming for profit crowd" for the forseeable future.

    Just my 2 cents.

        Not a very well thought out "solution".....to what?

        Similar to some states that are trying to push regulating the sale of ammo for the guns that will have to be pryed out of my cold, dead hands.

        The little old (well maintained) clunker I drive gets 40mpg......don't see how getting a newer model is going to be better.
        When this one gives up, I will look for another.......just out of perverseness (is that a word?).

        Seems like my Corvette would fill the bill rather nicely.

        Cheers, Sandy

          As I understand it, it would be voluntary to turn in an older car to get the tax credit. No one would be forced to turn in anything. Maybe this would be another financial incentive to buy a new car. There should be a restriction on any of these tax incentives to purchase a new car that the car be American made! Just my 2 cents from Detroit- the home of the Great(er) Depression.

            It would be a bit stupid to turn in say a '93 Buick to replace in with a '09 model. The '93 gets better mileage than the '09. In fact many cars of that time period get better mileage than new cars of the same size/model built in 2008 or 2009. Since after '93 the actual mileage has gone downhill.

              That is what I mean, Gene......my last old clunker was an old, elegant Chrysler 5th Ave. Good mileage, great car, until modified by late husband taking out 3 deer. Did have fun pounding out the fender though.
              And my old clunker 3/4 ton truck goes places I wouldn't dream of taking a new truck.
              Next "old clunker" will be the Corvette.
              American made make the best clunkers by far.

                Re: " Cash for Clunkers"

                I believe some of the concerns expressed center around the "turn in to be crushed" concept in that then removes the car as a candidate doner for parts. Don't expect too many cars voluntarily turned in will be Corvettes, but there could be a lot of old reliable Chevy V8's (weathered blocks) lost for good.
