Strain your eyes to see if you can make out a letter F, K, J or T, just to the left of the first number 1.

      Wayne,

      608901 or 106809
Depending on your viewpoint. There is nothing discernable on either side of that. There is a handwritten 3e on the rh side of the case which looks like it was scratched into the sand before the case was cast.

        Hi Wayne...

So is this an M20 or M21?

        Thx!

Drew -- your shot of the gears with sidecover off seems to show 2 ring grooves on the countershaft gear (the one most forward is in the shadow) which indicates wide ratio M20, on a 1966+ model year 4-spd Muncie.

Couple of other things to confirm. If trans is unbolted from bellhousing, see if also two rings on the splined input shaft. Another (if trans is on the bench) is to shift into 1st gear [if side cover is back on, turn 1st-2nd lever shaft clockwise; if cover off, push synchro slider to the rear, until engages with 1st gear -- in your pic it's in 2nd gear, which is where it should be to remove / install cover]. Then put a mark on input and output shafts and rotate the input (say) 5 times. If the output mark rotates 2_1/4 times, it's a close ratio; if output rotates only 2.0 times, it's wide.
