    Clutch Release Bearing

    1971
    350 270hp
    4 speed

I am in the process of replacing my release bearing as the old one was noisy.

I ordered a new bearing from NAPA using a part number that I got on a previous post: BCA------614018 (self-aligning)

The NAPA guy said that part number was for 84-88 corvettes, and the correct part number is N 1448. Could someone please shed some light on this for me?

    Thanks,
    Andrew Papanicolaou (48361)

    Andrew,

The GM part number on this bearing was 908244 which was replaced by p/n 15680264 about 5 years ago (maybe longer).

I show an aftermarket part number of ct24ag and another one of N1488. I'm not sure if either of these are still a good numbers.

Napa should be able to cross the old 908244 part number or the current one.

Simply put, the NAPA guy is incorrect. All 1957-81 Corvettes currently use clutch release bearing BCA 614018. This is a self-aligning bearing which is also known as GM #15680264 or Delco #CT24AG as Ernie has mentioned. In fact, if you purchase either of the GM or Delco bearings what you will find in the box is a BCA 614083 bearing with that number stamped right on it.

1984-88 Corvettes use bearing BCA 614083. That bearing is also known as GM #15613306 or Delco CT24KVAL. It is the same 1-1/4" length as the 57-81 bearing and of similar configuration but it's not the same bearing.

I don't know what an N 1448 is. However, it may be a cheaper, non-self-aligning type bearing.

        Re: Clutch Release Bearing

        Thanks for the info guys!!!

Here is some information for those that need to replace their release bearing:

Went to NAPA and sure enough the parts system called for P# N-1448. (refered to as 2nd design 57-81 corvette) He didn't have one in stock so not sure what this bearing looks like. (maybe not self aligning)

Gave the NAPA guy the BCA 614018 number which changed up in his system to P# N3068-SA made by "SKF". Same dimensions as the 614018 bearing.

So,OK bought the bearing and thought that was it. Well when I took the bearing out of the box it was made of plastic and a aluminum. I test fitted the bearing onto the clutch fork and snap the ear of the plastic broke off. I have installed hundredes of release bearings so I know It wasn't an installation error. I Look at the box and bearing and where do you think its made? "Japan".

Took the bearing back to NAPA, got my money back and went to an AC Delco supplier and got a 614018, in a "federal-Mogul" box and made in the "USA". No plastic parts and is probably 3 times the weight.

Nice to know that we can still purchase quality parts and not some foreign junk that would have probably lasted a few months.

        Thanks again for the info,
