I do know of a well known black/saddle convertible clone L-88. Perhaps it was the same one, but I can't tell you yet.

I watched the black one go through on the Mecum websight live. They claimed that they believed it to be an original L88 but didn't have the paperwork or history to back it up.

Does anyone know why the 66 425 horse coupe sold at such a low price? $52,000 or $53,000. They called it matching numbers.

There wasn't much support for this Corvette when it rolled on the block. Overheard from someone more knowledgeable than me was "fake" and "trim tag".

The auctioneer said as he introduced the car that it was "believed to be an authentic L88 but it doesn't have all the documentation".

To top it all off, the seller or whoever drove the Corvette on stage (not mecum) had a beer in his hand the whole time he was in the car.

Yeah Keith, I heard the same thing, some of the special L88 items were not there on this car, that factory cars have.

There was a black / saddle one in KY a few years ago, but I don't think it was this one.

Is their a VIN # or date when GM started installing closed chamber heads in the L88 ?
How many total were built ?

Tom, that is the $64 question. I have seen quite a few of the cars, the earliest I have seen is March. You still see IT engines in June. I think that they mixed the engines randomly until they ran out of IT's.

All L-88 engines came factory equipped with closed chamber alum heads from introduction in 1967 and continued through Jan / Feb 1969 (I Think, but stand to be corrected). At that time, the open chamber heads were installed.

Dick, is the cutoff for the IT motor around #22000/ which is June 69?

When we did the 2nd revision of the manual we thought that the changeover came about that point. However we have found documented Open Chamber cars built in March and Closed Chamber cars built well after March. It now appears that the O/C & C/C engines were randomly mixed in production until probably June. I personally have not seen C/C engines later than that. But never say never.

The key word on any of these cars is provenance
