Reproduction 287 BR igntion coil too fat?

    Hello everyone,
Has anyone had a problem with one of the GM Restoration Parts reproduction 287 coils (or any of the various number repro coils) having too large of a circumference? I was trying to install mine and the coil support is just not closing tight enough to allow engagement of the screw. It seemed odd, so I pulled out another 287 coil (not a reproduction and not functional) that came with the car and it is slightly smaller with no problems engaging the threads and actually fitting the way it is supposed to.

Just wondering if this is a common problem. Basically this new coil is junk to me now or I will have to modify my coil support.

    Thanks for any input.

i think these repo coils have a complete coil inside a outer added on cover that has the correct # so that would make them bigger in diameter. JMHO

Same holds true for the 270 (SB coil). A longer/incorrect screw will allow clamping in the original support. When/if it EVER warms up in Michigan - it's 5 degrees this AM - I want to try and use a clamp (while the longer screw is in the support) to allow a bite with the correct screw. Meanwhile, my search for an original 270 continues...

Thanks for the input guys. This should have been an easy drop in and move on task. I found that if I squeeze the housing at the ears I can get about 2 threads to engage. Not good. Also the shaft of the bolt will contact the case of the coil. The other thing I noticed was once the bracket was placed on the manifold to bolt down, the spread of the ears at the bottom would not allow proper alignment of the intake bolt holes with the coil down in the bracket. I am not going to force it.

With the original coil their was very little extra room when installing the screw in the bracket. I agree that some reproductions are a sleeve over a coil.

I'd sure like to hear about the coil fit with those made by Goat Hill.

Pagaron says they have an unsleaved 287 for $90. eBay has them for $$$$$. I have the same choices

After a lot of searching and time I finally found an original 270 BR for a decent price. He's on ebay once in a while but you can deal with him directly, Jim Feltes, email vettepart@aol.com.

He's got a lot of original parts and did a nice job restoring this coil (all original, just a new paint job). Highly recommend him, tell him I sent you!

Just wanted to give you guys an update.

I tried the Paragon "unsleeved" coil. It is GM Restoration Parts coil and is too big also. The side is embossed "287" w/ "12 v" underneath. The other GM Resto coil I have says "287" w/ "B R" underneath.

I bought one from Goat Hill two years ago. Fits fine and works fine. A little pricey as I recall. Jim

It may be a sleeve issue on the repro numbered coils but I had the same problem on a replacement (non-numbered) coil bought at NAPA. Maybe its a metric thing?
