    c-1 58 horn mount plates

Hi, the horn mount plates on my 58 are original.

When I tried to put a bolt in the threaded plate that was the correct size it pushed through. I think the threaded nut of the mount plate is corroded, so it won't hold the threads of the bolt. I can't get any size to grip and hold.

My question is how can I get to the backside of the mounting plate. This would allow me to install a new mounting plate. It seems the mounting plate was installed before the area was sealed off.

I am thinking I might epoxy a new mounting plate over top, but not sure if anyone has a better idea or have solved this already.

    Thanks,
    Susan

    Susan,

Believe it or not you can get to the area with a few contortions. There are 2 rivets outbound of the bolt hole. You could carefully grind off the heads of the rivets with access through the grille opening or working upside down with the hood and radiator out. Once removed the new plate can be re-riveted with a standard impact rivet gun and a backup weight held behind the plate. You will have to reach up around through the front of the wheel well opening. Long arms help.

Are you shure that the welds that hold the nut didn't break, allowing the nut to fall off? You will probably have to take the front wheel off to observe the nut. If the nut is still there, but the hole is too big, you could install a helicoil. You will probably have to remove your grill and posibly use a right angle drill.
My 59 did not have any horn mount plates when I bought it. Buba had torn them out. I had to repair the the fiberglass where they mount and install new plates.
