65-67 Side Pipe U-Nuts Original vs. Replacments

I don't know if this has been noted in the JM but I thought I'd post pictures of original side pipe mounting u-nuts compared to replacements.

I have included 3 pictures of u-nuts. The original clip can be spotted from the later replacements in 3 easiy point.

First from the front the originals have a M stamping while the replacments don't.

Second and most easily spotted the originals use a captured square nut while the replacements use a hex nut. This can be easily seen when the 2 clips are installed on the fender skirt splash shield.

Third the original u-nuts have a wider opening allowing them to be installed onto fiberglass as well as the steel splash shields.

As a side note the overall width of the original is shorter than the replacements allowing them to be more easily installed onto the rockers.

I also will add that the plating on my originals resemble black phosphate

This agrees with the nuts I examined on a friend's original car -- see link

P.S. Admin: strange that this link (Oct 24 2008) would not have been among the "similar threads" selected at the bottom. No idea what the search criteria are .

          Craig,
you are correct all originals I have removed have been black or grey phosphate.

          Wayne,
thanks for the links. I saw some questions in your link as to thread and types of screws so here is what I have seen. All side pipe u-nuts were 10-24 thread. The screws securring the covers to the rockers were a large pan head phillips while the 2 screws attaching the front hanger brackets to the fender skirt splash shield had a 5/16" recessed and flanged hex head. I should have some originals laying aroud and will post some pics of them later.

          Larry,
your welcome. What fun is it knowing something but not sharing it?

            OK,

I dug some original front hanger bolts out. And while I was doing that I wanted to see if it was the same pt# as the 68-72 wiper door limit switch bolt and yes it is. If you look on the 65 AIM under UPC N-14 sheet 3 the screw is is listed as pt# 9421033, then if you check the 69 AIM under UPC 1 sheet D1 you will see the limit switch L bracket to wiper door hinge arm screw is pt # 9421033 also.

I have included 2 pictures to show the bolts (sorry I have a hard time calling anything with a hex head a screw).

I have seen many different headmarkings on these. The ones here have what I refer to as the T/F headmarking.
