    Early 69 steering interlock decal

There were 2 different versions of the decal/label which cautioned owners regarding the steering column interlock used for the 1969 model year.

The early version was printed on a white label and included this long winded wording:

"As part of the new column locking feature, it is normal for the mast jacket shift bowl to rotate when shifting the transmission. However, do not attempt to rotate the shift bowl by itself as damage to the shift linkage will result"

The later version was printed in white on a clear label and simply reads:

"This is a rotating interlock. Do not manipulate. Damage may result"

In very late 1969, the rotating column shifter bowl was replaced with a non-rotating design and the label was eliminated.

Althought the late label only appears on July and August '69 built cars, repoductions are available. I have not seen any repoductions of the early labels. I am looking at making my own or having some made. Does anyone have one of these early labels? Can someone post a picture so I can see the font, line breaks, and dimensions? Was this a plastic, plastic coated paper, or paper label?

Also, I have seen pictures of the later style lables applied to the column horizontally. My Oct 68 build date shows evidence that a label was applied to the left side of the column vertically. Any comments on that?

I can take a picture of the label on my 1968 November built 69 if you like. It is the early label you reference.

That would be great. I would appreciate the dimensions and material too.

Please forward me a copy of the photo so that maybe we can use it in the revision of the 1968-1969 Technical Information and Judging Guide

Will do when I get home this evening. I'm not too sure how to post pictures but I will give it a try.

The dimension of the paper tag (no coatings just paper) is 1.75" X 2.6875".
Photos are attached. Let me know if anyone desires addition photos or information.

Re: Early 69 steering interlock decal

Both my 1969 T&T and standard (non-adjustable) steering column assembly drawings have a stationary shroud over the rotating bowl. So my drawings must be the 1969 Late model year steering columns. If Joe Luccia or someone else can provide the 1969 Early part numbers for the T&T and standard steering columns, I will try to get the original drawings for reference.

Off this topic! It's too bad that we are prevented from marking more than one Model Year Icon to help searchers. For instance, Corvette steering columns really fit the following years: 63-64, 65-66, 67, 68, 69-75, 76, 77, 78-82. Only three of the eight segments fit an icon.

Holly Molly that is a big label. I would suspect that the majority of these were removed at the first interior cleaning by the owner. I have never seen this label and the adhisive residue on my column is much smaller so I think that 2/3 of it must have stayed on the label when it was removed.

Being simple white adhesive backed paper I'm suprised that this is not available in reproduction. Maybe just too big and ugly to put back on anything other than a NCRS car.

It certainly seems simple enough to have reproduced so that is my plan. I'll look into having a run of these made and let everyone know when I get them.

Although most of it is gone now, this is the label I have on my October '68 car. Thanks for posting a readable version.

I was at Bairs Corvette buying some parts and found two different steering column decals. Here is a picture of each. The smaller one is on a one owner car with a may build date, and the other was on a column in storage, not sure of the build date.

I told him that some people were looking to buy some of these labels and that he should see about getting them duplicated. He has the columns in hand and Im sure he could get an excellent reproduction if he went to a printer. I told him I should get one for free for the idea....Yeah right..

                              Ned,

Excellent pictures and exactly what I was asking for. Interesting how the "do not" in red looks like a second, misaligned pass through the printer.

This site is so cool. I can't imagine trying a restoration without it.
