    579E Column Mounted Tach

There have been a couple of reproduction AC 8000 RPM tachs out there. One repro I believe is based on a diesel tach(??). What are the differences between those supplied by Chevy and the repros?

    Thanks!

The originals and the power unit tachometers were made from the same components other than the face. The difference was calibration. I cannot speak for the reproductions, but if you could find an old power unit tach, there are a couple of vendors that can silk screen the faces and do the calibration.

Thanks Dick! I have a couple I have had for well over 20 years and about 15 years ago a friend went to a garage sale and picked up a face for 75 cents and gave to me! Did the power unit tachs use the same mounting cup?

This brings up a most interesting and challenging question. With the recent revelation of information provided in Ken Kayser's new book, is RPO 579E going to be changed (as it seems it should be changed) to RPO 579 D?

The power unit tachs were mounted in the instrument panel. Sorry, no cigar!

A few years ago when I went to see Larry Fisette and the 20 trailer load collection of muscle cars and parts he bought and then was for sale...I about fainted when I noticed a box full of what looked like NOS 8000 AC tachs. Upon further exmination they were 80 MPH speedometers but the shape and construction and date of issue was just like the 1957 8000 AC tach.

I suspect an enterprising person could have changed the face and guts and created new NOS AC 8000 tachs keeping the original glass, bezel and housing.

No idea what happened to that box of stuff. Probably still sitting in the trailer that went to the new owner.

              I have a picture somewhere.

The 80 mph speedos were used in the GMC trucks of that era, the Cannonballs and Crackerboxes

Look what is on eBay, stating it is original.

I compared the one on e-bay with a known orig. The hash marks on the face look too "fat" also the numerals are a diffrent configuration, notably the Eight, six, & the four everything else looks passable.

Agree with Barry. That tach probably started life out powering a sawmill or pumping water on an engine that probably never turned more than 1,800 rpm's

Steve, I used to sell those NOS diesel tachs. Low RPM tachs. The case on them does not have the lite cut outs. If someone has an original he wants to restore they have a lot of good parts such as the bezel and glass.
I remember Werner Grossmuller used to have someone in FL make him a new face for the diesel tachs but I don't know who it is. John

John, Chuck Bridgerman used to escreen these faces. Some of the diesel tachs did have the cutouts for lighting. They were probably a marine or automotive application. He was living in Timonium, MD the last time I knew
