    Tunnel insulation

    I'd like to try to reduce my cabin temps for this comming season and I'm attacking the insulation first. Is it possible to replace my torn up tunnel insulation and collar without removing the TH400 and LS5 it is attached to?

    Lynn;

    I know you can do it on a C2 with a 4 speed, because I have actually done it! Perhaps some of the other guys will have experience with a C3..

    When I have taken down and replaced my BW 4 speed, I have had to remove the insulation in order to get the tranny up in place, the spacing is that tight. Afterwards, I just slip the insulation back in place and bend over those metal tabs.

    Have fun!

      Re: Tunnel insulation

      If I needed to replace the insulation on my 70 turbo 400 I would attempt to do it without removing the turbo 400. Since the crossmember for the turbo 400 is removable, I would support the crossmember with a floor jack and remove the two side bolts. The fan is easily removed, so as a precaution I would take it off so it would not contact the fan shroud. I would continually check the distributors clearance and if I thought it necessary would disconnect the distributors tack drive cable.
      I would also consider removing the motor mount bolts to the engine, I would not want to destroy a motor mount if removing the attaching bolts would save it.
      All the precautions would also depend on how much room I would have to have when lowering the turbo 400 only enough to bend the retainers and remove and install the new insulation.
      Actually disconnecting the turbo 400 and using a 2X10 board under the pan to support the transmission and lowering it is not all that difficult, I would also consider doing this since I have done it before to replace the front seal of my turbo 400. Support would also be required under the oil pan for the engine.
