I am the happiest guy on the planet today.
Bob Dye raced a 57 Corvette in SCCA B Production races in Northern CA from 1967 to 1972. A number of guys, including Chip Miller, have owned Bob's 57 Corvette since 1972. The car is now a vintage racer, and I am the latest owner. I built a website for the car that shows the history of the car by owner. Bob Dye spotted the website I posted regarding his old 57 Corvette #43 and sent me an email today. I did not even know Bob was still alive. I called Bob and we chatted for about 45 minutes. Great guy.
Bob gave me some very insightful information about his racing days. Bob ran a 283 engine bored .040 over, the max allowed by the SCCA. Bob mated the engine with a 302 Corvette Z28 cam. Bob said that the engine came alive with the Camaro cam. Bob said that he usually shifted the car at 7500rpm, and that the car would still pull at 8000 rpm. Bob said that he would run the car up to 8000 rpm leading into the corkscrew at Laguna.
Bob ran a standard RPO 687 Big Brake setup. When i asked him how the car braked, Bob said that the braking was perfect. He said the brakes would never fade. Bob thought the RPO 687 was a great setup.
The best part - Bob said that he still had his racing trophies and some other goodies related to #43. Bob offered to reunite the trophies with #43 in the not too distant future.
Here is one of my favorite pics of Bob racing #43.
