    Restoring original bumpers

Hello - Any recommendations on cleaning up my original bumpers. I would like to use them if possible without replating them. They have some minor surface rust inside and the outside has scratches and the finish is a little dull.

    Thanks Dave

    Dave -

A dull finish on the outside (which doesn't respond to "chrome polish") means the clear chrome layer has deteriorated, which exposes the bright nickel layer under it and allows it to oxidize; the clear chrome top layer protects the nickel layer.

      Dave:

Once the scratches start you're pretty much done. You'll probably be a lot happier replating them than anything else that you can do. They'll look a lot better too.

        Hi David,
I just replied to Greg Freed's post about chrome prices. I thought you might be interested, too, in case you decide you want to have yours re-plated.
A few years ago I paid $175 to have the front bumper and each rear bumper re-chromed. The two front bumper guards were $90 each. They turned out beautifully and really add to the car's appearance.
Too bad Christmas is just past, otherwise perhaps Santa could have brought you some chrome plating.
        Regards,
        Alan

Thanks for the advice. I will get some estimates on re-chroming my originals.
