    63/64 Idler Pulley stud

Hi All, I believe I have a 'repro' idler pulley stud. It makes the idler pulley protrude forward creating a misalinement of the fan belt. All other pulleys align nicely except this one. Does anyone have handy the length of the 5/8 hex area on the stud? Looks like mine needs a 'trim' job!

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

    Dan,

I have a used original Idler stud. The hex section measures 1.450", or slightly less than 1 1/2".

The stud should be installed without a lock washer between it and the water pump.

Thanks Michael, the stud measures out OK, sooo, the problem might be with the repro idler pully assembly setting to far forward. Don't have an original to compare offhand, would be interesting to see what one measures when laying flat on it's mounting tabs to center of the pulley to compare to what's on my 64. No lock washer under the stud but maybe the water pump hole boss may be different. (thicker etc.).

Dan, I was wondering how you were able to drive your 64FI car to most every regional and national on the west coast covering 13,000 miles with a pulley issue.I do believe you have driven your 64 FI car to more shows than 99% of NCRS members.
And on top of all that driving your have been in the high 90's point wise!!!! Good job my friend. JD
I prefer a putting the LWC in a nice cozy trailer though.

Thanks John and Michael, stud was as it should be, removed idler assembly, supported the back of the shaft on a vise, used a socket and a 'Harley' hammer to set the pulley back 1/8", perfecto! Just wasn't pressed on far enough on the shaft.

Hi Dan, just measured mine from my '63 340.It's 3.25" to the center of the pulley.
              Aloha,

If you have everything you need, Dan, I'll bow out except to say I have all the original pieces off my 63 340 hp too, in case you or anyone else needs a second opinion.

Thanks Irby and Stu, 3.25" is a good reference point and for anyone else who has alignment issues with the idler pulley. In my case the pulley was not pressed far enough onto the shaft for proper alignment.
