I have a 69-71, u-79 stereo radio, adapter, and convector. My question is should I have a dual or single (ds-5o1) on the heat sink convector, or is there a functional difference between the 2 types. The radio has one plug for a speaker and adapter has a plug for another speaker. A dual heat sink convector looks to have both speakers plugs, this is a bit confusing. Steve

Re: U-79 Stereo Single Or Dual Heat Sinks
From what you posted Steve it sounds like you don't need anything else. You said you had "a 69-71, u-79 stereo radio, adapter, and convector".
If you have a plug on the back of the radio that has yellow/green/blue wires, and you have a convector (with a DS-501) that plugs into it that's one stereo channel that's complete.
If the "adapter" is a metal box with a heat sink and another DS-501 with a black wire and black plug that connects to the back of the radio, you have the second channel parts needed.
Did that make sense?
I have the Delco radio repair manuals for those years down in the shop if you want me to look up anything specific.

Re: U-79 Stereo Single Or Dual Heat Sinks
Jerry, I have a reciever, adapter, and a (single) heat sink, works great, however, just one speaker is working, the balance control (turn c.c.w.,works, turn c.w. nothing, center,1 speaker only), maybe reciever problem? I found that a/c cars and conv. had different convectors or adapters not sure which or both, also, I have seen 2 different convector,s one with 2 (ds-501) having 6 wires (2-y,2-g,-2-b), and a smaller finned with just 1 (ds-501) 3 wires,(1-y,1-g,1-b,) just as I have. I would like to know if I have the correct parts, or just how many different combinations of adapters and convectors were used for 69-71. Steve- Top

Re: U-79 Stereo Single Or Dual Heat Sinks
You do not need the convector with the two DS-501's - that's for a later year stereo radio.
You do have everything you need. The single heat sink (convector) you mentioned is for one channel and the 'adapter' you mentioned (which is a stereo de-multiplexer) has the second channel amplifier (DS-501 convector) built onto the back of it.
There are many reasons you may not have sound from one speaker. But, the first thing to try is: 1. unplug the speaker that has no sound. 2. Put an ohm meter set to the X1 scale across the two connectors on the back of the speaker. 3. You should read less than 10 ohms and HEAR a popping sound when you touch the leads to the contacts. 4. If you hear the popping sound, then the speaker is good in which case -> 5. the radio has a problem or 6. the 'adapter' has a problem or 7. the single heat sink (convector) is bad which is very doubtful.
I've fixed dozens of those stereo U79's Steve and, if the speaker is good, the problem requires test equipment. It is not always hard to find or expensive to repair but it does require a radio background.
Hope that explains things - you have all the system pieces you need for it to play which is good.
If your "silent" speaker is good and you want someone to check out the radio and adapter and convector for you, drop me a note. I can get it playing again. (jerry@electrodesign.us)- Top

Re: U-79 Stereo Single Or Dual Heat Sinks
Jerry, I had another convector from a good working u-69 mono radio (1970), and tried no difference. The dual ds-501's convector was used on stereos for later 70's or 80's. wow, Thanks for that info.,I will do test and get back to you with results, now that you got me on right track. Steve
