    '63 Trailing Arm damaged....

I guess when you disassemble, you should expect surprises. Two questions...
    1. Is this a '63 trailing arm?
    2. Is this repairable?

Irby, they do not look like 63 or 64 T-arms. They are from a later car. Even if they were 63 T-arms I would not try to repair them. New 63 T-arms can be bought for about $195 each. Look at Bairs.

I saw a wheel cylinder, so this had brake drums, no rotors. If the trailing arm are not (thin) rusted thru anywhere , it can be repaired, re-bushings (straighten bushing flange) and check, lube or replace bearings as required, or exchanged for rebuild assembly. There is a tool available to lube bearings without spindle removal, compare cost. Steve

Yeah. These have drum brakes, but they didn't look like the pictures of 63/64's that I've seen. I was wanting to do the procedures that you mentioned, Steve. But, if they aren't 63's, I'd like to get the correct ones and rebuild those. I have a friend that has an original set or else I'll go through Bairs as the others have suggested.

How do the t-arms from Bairs judge out?

They are not 63 trailing arms. 63-64 arms did not have the bump pad that is welded on 65 and later cars.

                  Irby,

GM 63-64 service replacement trailing arm has the pad on top like 65-up but there are no brackets for parking brake cable outboard. My memory tells me other than that they are the same, they did carry a different part # though. The trailing arm looks like it's in good shape other than the bushing in the front, if no rust a little grinding to remove the added brackets and I think your good to go.

The other hardware (driveshaft flange etc.) looks like all 63 so be careful taking everything apart and who you give it to because the parts are hard to find these days. Better double check the spindle, it may have been replaced also and I am not sure the difference between drum brake spindle and disc spindle.

I stopped at the Bairs counter at Carslile last Aug and asked about 63 T arms. They told me they don't have 63 arms. I believe they can rebuild your old ones though.

Strange, I bought a set from them, last year, for my 63 and they looked to be an exact copy?

                      This is from their site.

Has anyone had a set of the Bair's t-arms judged? How'd they do?

To all -- here's 2 shots of one T/A assy. off a Jan/Feb '64. low mile Calif. car. Complete rear suspension removed and stored since ~ 1968. Original brake lines (hard & soft) and P.brake cables.

Note no bracket on outboard side of arm.

Wayne, another question, in the first picture where the parking brake is secured to the drum plate, would you know where can I get the metal grommet that secures the parking brake to the plate?

Irby -- Sorry I don't. Is this the grommet you're referring to ? (shots inside and out). Looks rather complicated .
