c-3 U79 Stereo, Green face, blue stereo light

I am trying to identify a stereo radio from unknown year car, without a part # label. I compared it to a 70 corvette, non stereo radio and they both have green face tuning #'s, same shaft length and same overall dimentions. The stereo unit has blue block lettering (stereo) in upper right face corner. I have bench tested unit with adapter and convector, and it works fine on left speaker (from adapter), Right speaker (from radio harness, green + black) will not work by using balance control. I removed front plate and I do not see a seperate lamp to light the stereo indicator. My questions are, should their be a light to indicate when you have a stereo signal?, and having a green face tuning #'s like 70, why does it have blue (block lettering instead of green or yellow dot) stereo indicator ? I do not know radios past, so maybe parts were swaped. Can anyone help figure out what year stereo or front cover plate this is ? Steve

    Steve,

1971 Corvette radios are like the '70 model year. The blue STEREO rectangular square does light up when it has stereo signal. A red round light in upper right corner indicates a '72 and up radio. 1971 is last year that Corvette radios used green lettering to match other gauge facings with same color. '72 and up are white.

Only stereo radios had right control knob that matches left knob so that you had a tab to control base/trebble and left/right speakers.

Warren, Thanks for info., I do not see any clues that a signal strength lamp assy. was ever there. The blue stereo lense stays lit with the same lamp use for green faced #'s . I don't remember ever seeing a stereo lamp that would go off or stay on depending on location and signal strength back in late sixtys or up to 71. I guess that indicator assembly was disgarded, if you have seen this on a working U-79 STEREO RADIO. I have not found any info. about this working lamp, in my library or archives. Steve

        Steve,

I went out and turned on the ignition key, turned on the radio (U69/79), as I turned the knob to change stations the blue lighted STEREO came on and off as I received signals.

I then turned on the lights (first notch), all the instrument lights (green) came on, including the green lit radio dial face. As i turned the tuning knob, the radio face light and STEREO light went on and off as I received a radio signal together.

Thanks again Warren, Your info. reassures me that the stereo indicator lamp assy. was disgarded on this radio. Steve
