    Restoration Parts

I am starting to restore various parts to original with possibility of judging at some point in the future. When purchasing parts I see advertized from companies such as Corvette Central parts identified as orginals, correct numbers, correct date, etc. Do these after market parts when purchased with the corrct markings meet original requirements when being judged?

Let me understand you question, are you talking about reproduction parts such as a coil? Are you talking about original rebuilt used and dated parts? Are you talking about used original re stamped dated parts? Could you be a little more specific? Thanks

Walter, most if not all parts (reproduction parts) are close or somewhat close to the original part. They are usually detected by a judge and the appropriate point deduction happens. This is not as bad as it sounds, sometimes the only part available is a reproduction part. Many parts sellers sell the same part, some are made by their suppliers and some suppliers supply all the parts sellers. Saying, some parts sellers, sell a better reproduction than another seller.

I would try to restore a used original prior to buying a reproduction, especially where date codes are required. If it's not rusted to pieces or bent beyond recognition or broken into pieces try the restoration route.

In many cases the reproduction part is less expensive than restoring the original part.

This is a tough subject, a little sensitive but it's your car and you must decide. As you go through your restoration, ask questions here and I'm sure lots of opinions and guidance will be offered.

Few repro parts are dead on but there are some, other repro's may be to weak, strong, thin, thick, wrong logos ,or design and so on . But many times finding the original part is near impossible ,if a repro parts passes the JM what does it matter, only if your a funatic it then becomes a treasure hunt to find and re-condition the original part (which I'm one) . Bottom line it's your call
