67 Corvette Gas Tank Paint Marking

    Hi:
I've read about how some of the 67 Corvette tanks have their part number stenciled on the side of the tank to identify the tanks part number when they are stacked on a pallet on the factory floor. But I haven't heard anything about a small white stripe/marking on the right rear portion of the the tank starting on the top surface and continuing down the rear vertical surface of the tank. Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone know what the purpose of this mark is for? I've enclosed a picture of the mark. The top surface of the mark in the picture is covered with feather fill/paint overspray when I painted the car over 20 years ago.

It looks like someone just used the tank to wipe some goo off of their finger.

67 Corvette Gas Tank Paint Marking

I was looking at this paint mark again, and to me it looks like it was applied with a brush. Has anyone else seen this on a midyear tank? Could it be a mark that indicated the tank was torqued down? Or maybe a mark indicating the straps on the pallet of tanks was complete? Or maybe as Mike alluded to, it was just someone wiping the snot off their glove/finger.

Thomas, it looks like a brush mark but too neat and straight to look like a random mark. It looks like paint. Is it paint?

It appears to be paint. The mark is a little chalky from age, but is still there.

Is having the part number painted on the gas tank common? There's no mention that I could see in the judging manual. I just dropped my gas tank today (trying to get the bolts and fasteners finished correctly). I was pretty sure my tank had been replaced, although it appears to be correct replacement. Even though it had been replaced I still had some "hope" there was a tank sticker but there was not. I did however uncover the job number on the rear of the storage compartment. So at least something good came out it. Shooter
P.S. Thomas, I hope you don't mind me posting this in your thread.

It is my understanding that the supplier stacked a bunch of tanks on a pallet, and strapped the tanks to the pallet. Then the vendor randomally sprayed the part number stencil to some of the tanks (but not all of them) to identify the tanks for receiving and for feeding the assembly line.

My 67's vin #21683 had no part# stenciled on nor did it have any paint marks.
