    1963 spare tire lid

I am almost finished removing undercoat (PIA) from my tire lid and want to know if anyone with a 63 lid has ever seen paint on the inside like I have encountered. Look at these pics, I appreciate everyones opinion.

Also, the metal reinforcement has a bend and I really wanted to leave the rivets alone. I have never set one of these rivets so I am not sure what to do. Are the correct rivets available or is it better to leave well enough alone??

    Thanks, Tim

Tim, I've never seen paint on an original, but who knows.

As far as the rivets go, they are available. They might be a tough too long so do a test set of one on a scrap piece of metal. If they are too long just cut off 1/8 of an inch and test again. They are easy to replace. So if you want to remove the bracket, media blast it, straighten it and paint it go ahead. It's a straight forward job. All ya need is the rivets and the rivet set that creates the mushroom head. The tools is about $4.00 as I recall. An extra set of hands and a heavy hammer works just fine.

Harry, Thanks for the input, I really want to remove the brace but I am concerned about setting the rivets properly. What does this setting tool look like and can you use it with a mull hammer? Where is the best place to purchase correct rivets ?

I noticed a shinney black (what looked like paint) underneith the undercoat, it scraped off with the undercoat where it was not thick. I would like to see a pic of a unrestored 63 lid. This lid looks well preserved by the undercoat but I really wonder if the lid was painted black, the inside looks like it has never been touched and it has black paint.

I see no evidence of paint on the tub, I will clean that after I finish the lid.

I don't recall any paint but mine did have yellow crayon marking of some sort.

Tim, Mine looks almost identical to yours. So whatever was done to yours, was done to mine.

            Tim,

when we redid my 1963 Z06 in 2004, we found paint and crayon markings

              Re: 1963 spare tire lid

Thanks everyone for the replys. At this time I am leaving the inside untouched with the paint. Removing the undercoat was a PIA but it's finished. I have one little spot to repair on the lid then attach the painted brace to the lid.

Can anyone offer advice on the tool to set these little rivets?

Tim, I agree the originals had no paint. Be careful on the rivet thing though as they shouldn't have any black paint on them. Mine do on the LWC and I got dinged for it. JD
