Does anyone ever polish their mint Frame, and just spray Clearcoat enamel on to show the Fames natural beauty ? What do you think of that? Or would polishing the Frame and then just spray transmisson oil on and keep applying the oil on, to keep the Frame from rusting.

Re: Frame conditioning
Harry, I think I would try the transmission fluid in a very inconspicuous place as it may strip the paint. That would be VERY disappointing.
Personally, I would lean away from lubricants as they attract dust, which attracts moisture which, when maintained in close proximity to steel promotes corrosion. In order to prevent the moisture from migrating through or past the lube, you'd probably have to use enough as to make the whole thing somewhat unsightly. I've got decades of experience with this struggle as we have, in the aviation industry, multi-million-dollar corrosion prevention/control programs that are all, in the final analysis, but an ongoing experiment.
If you have a way to raise the car to a comfortable working height, you can clean and wax small areas at a time. Do it a couple times a year, particulary if you live in a high humidity area like the coasts or anywhere in the South. ("How", you ask yourself, "does he come by this knowledge?")
Now I don't have the JG so I don't know if you would get gigged for waxing the frame or not BUT, you would be preserving the finish on your frame and preventing corrosion while doing it.
THAT has always been a much higher priority with me.
Good luck.- Top

Re: Frame conditioning
Hi Harry,
You bring up an interesting question.
If we disregard the whole area of how the frame would be judged, I think a really detailed, well painted frame, (alright, a too well painted frame), would be more attractive than a detailed bare frame.
What do you think about that view?

Re: Frame conditioning
I like the looks of a well painted frame but my1966 original frame is in great.. condition, I just was thinking of natural. What do you think of spraying it with a clear clearcoat enamel? I am not worried about being judged. My car was repainted years ago , they also painted the side of the frame , the same color as the car. I stripped that paint and found the original stenciling and a beautiful frame. What do you think I should do?I have a car lift so it is easy to maintain.- Top

Re: Frame conditioning
Harry, I'm gonna leap out once more here...
Personally, (this is just me talking) if I had a lift, I think I'd go the clean and wax route. I only say that because I don't know how often you drive the car or if it's ever used on wet/nasty streets.
If it's the latter, then clear coat of some kind may be good protection.
On the other hand, if you don't drive it in foul weather, wax once a year or so should protect it nicely.
I'd love to hear some other ideas, also.- Top
