    C3-1971 - Yellow Crayon Numbers (inner panels)

    I have a 71 small block. I've located a few crayon (yellow) numbers on the inner panels of the body.

    1. Yellow 3 digit number on the inside of the rear valance area (right behind the license plate location).

    2. Yellow 3 digit number on the inside of the left rear quarter panel (above the marker light)

    3 I have a 3 digit number on the inside of my hood but it is in a red paint. It is located on the upper left (drivers side) when the hood is open. I'm not sure if it is factory or not.

    None of the numbers are identical, but the first two numbers (both share 14) of the 3 are the same.

    Are these the job number? Is it common that they are not identical? Where else can I look to find other numbers (which out taking the body off the frame!).

    Thanks,
    Greg

    They might be option codes...the red painted number I don't think came from the factory.

    Here's a pic of the rear bulkhead of my 71 s/b with 4 option codes

    M40= Auto Trans
    AC= Air Cond
    467= short hand for 19467 = Roadster Bodystyle
    UA6= Alarm System

      Gerald.... great pics of the crayon marks!! Not exactly sure where you mean these were found. Where more specifically is the "rear bulk" head and how accessed? Thanks in advance for your help!! Norm

        On my 68 I found markings on the left and right lower firewall area (toe pan?). One was PS and one was 418. Also found some above the storage tray (mine is a coupe) where you would store the removable rear window.

            Thanks, here's another pic that gives a better perspective.....it's the area ahead of the rear deck.

                Here's a date and someone's initials? from the underside of my 71's hood. The trim tag is F14.

                  Probably better described as the rear compartment floor; the "rear bulkhead" typically is understood to mean the rear vertical wall of the rear compartment. There may be markings (job number) on the "rear bulkhead", but on the fuel tank side of the bulkhead.

                  On a convertible, it is not obvious that those subfloor markings were made before the body was assembled. A person could reach inside a convertible body from above and write the letters facing to the rear. On a coupe, it is quite clear there is no way those marks could have been made after the body was assembled...that is, unless the marker was an ultra small midget, or just preferred writing upside down.

                    On my 70 roadster which has not been hit and ever panel shows the orginal seams and bonds, and has a A23 pro. date, there lots of paint stick markings on the inner rear fenders the rear tail light panel, and the deck above and in front of the spare tire holder (which I have removed now as to I just took the build order off the top of the tank) question is should I take pic. of all these markings, thanks

                      Hi Billy,
                      YES!!! I think it's a great idea to take some pictures.
                      I think they're an important part of documenting a particular car, and of interest to people with cars similar to yours.
                      Regards,
                      Alan
