    Antenna Rehab Question

As a winter project I decided to take a look at my original 65 antenna. After removing it I found that the motor was working. Without opening it up I lubed the cable and was able to free it up and now two sections go up and down with no problems. The top section does not retract. I'm happy that I got this far but would love to get it 100 percent. How is the cable attached and is it attached to the top section? Any suggestions.

The antenna cable usually rusts and swells up in the last section. It is usually impossible to free. Is your last section extended or retracted against the next sextion? You can remove the tip and pull the cable and last section thru the mast on a good mast.

Greg, The top section remains extended. How do you remove the tip? Can you remove the tip without damaging it? Thanks, Ray

I know of no way to remove the antenna mast tip without destroying it... That's one of the judge's visual clues to spoting an original antenna that's been restored.

The original tips were cast/molded with 'soft' edges while the reproductions used by most who provide power antenna restoration services are milled with 'sharp/crisp' edge details...

So let me see if I have this right. The cable is most likely rusted inside of the second from the top shaft? The top most section will turn freely( indepentantly). When I attempt to turn the second mast section there is resistance. Does this make sense?

The fitting on the end is usually a crimp so the end piece will usually rotate. The second section is probably frozen the next sextion. With the last section up that means the cable is frozen the full length on the second section so it is almost certainly hopeless.

You have to decide whether to leave as is, get it restored or go to a repo.

I have had no judging deductions at national meets with the tips I use.
