67-68 Telescoping Strg Column Disassembly & Repair Paper #1

I have completed a rough draft of the 1967-68 Corvette Telescoping Steering Column Disassembly & Repair Paper #1. The paper has a brief history of the General Motors, first generation, energy absorbing adjustable steering columns. It includes removing and replacing the turn signal switch and upper bearing as well as adjusting the telescope lock. Also included is a corrected blowup picture of the column.

It is available on the Corvettefaq.com websight. Here are two links. One in word.doc format the other as a pdf file.

I would be most appreciative of any feedback from any of you that actually own or are familiar with either of the above steering columns. Additions, corrections, comments are all welcome.
    Jim Shea

PS: I will begin working on D&R Telescoping Paper #2 in a week or two. This one will discuss dropping the steering column, replacing the lower bearing, and possibly some information on the telescoping steering shaft.

      Jim,

Read them both and the pdf version is much more readable because of the font.

On thing though. Yon mention on installing the steering wheel that you have to attach the steering wheel to the hub with the six screws. Yet on disassembly, you don't need to remove the wheel from the hub and remove the six screws (which is true). Maybe qualify on reassembly that "if you removed the wheel from the hub" you will need to reattach the wheel to the hub with the six screws, and use loctite with them.

Just a suggestion to make it better. Next time, I'll wear some designer jeans for the picture

Jim thanks for your information on the telescoping steering column. I have a 68 with telescoping column that I bought a new turn signal switch for over 20 years ago.
Have not installed my new turn signal switch because the original still functions electrically but will not lock in to keep the selected turn signal on.

Jim, this information is very timely for me as i just pulled my column to repair the four way flasher knob that broke off inside the column.

Is the four way flasher part of the turn signal switch? Do I need to order the entire turn signal switch assemble to replace the four way flasher? The plastic portion that the knob threads onto broke off inside.

          Thanks
          Lorne

I don't think that there are any loose parts that are available to purchase for the hazard warning part of a 1967-68 turn signal switch. So I would think that you will have to purchase the whole switch assembly. 1967-68 switches are the same and are available through several Corvette suppliers.
