Prior owner changed color to black...

Prior owner of my '63 coupe dyed (sp?) everything in car from dark blue to black . When I remove some trim parts, I can see the original blue underneath. It's a really nice color. Can't understand why he would color it black. What can I use to recolor things such as headliner and other. Interior items are in great condition, just black.

i wouldn't try removing the paint from the CARDBOARD headliner as the solvents will probably soften the glue in the cardboard. i'd just get Dark Blue vinyl paint in rattle can and re-shoot the headliner. when it comes to the Vinyl parts(door panels , seat cover and dash pads, depends on what type of paint was used to cover up the dark blue vinyl pieces. if the paint is enamel soluble, then enamel thinner may soften the paint enough to remove it. i've never had any luck removing paint from vinyl surfaces as the solvents tend to soften/melt the vinyl. suppose you could repaint the vinyl pieces, but there again, the vinyl paint over vinyl tends to crack, especially if the vinyl surfaces are exposed to deflectrions(seating yer buttock on the seat covers, for example). good luck, mike

Mike's suggestion sounds good. Years ago I helped a friend remove black dye ( I think it was probably paint) from the green upholstery in his '55 Chevy. We went to a professional upholstery shop who sold him 2 pints of a vinyl dye remover and it worked but we had to wipe with water and mild soap quickly after application to not melt the vinyl. We could not remove it from the cloth, only the vinyl. Maybe an upholstery shop has something??

Thanks, The headliner is the only thing I'm concerned with. From what I'm told, the grain in the headliner is not properly reproduced in the replacements. I'm buying new door panels, seat cover etc.
Do you know where can I get the vinyl paint in the correct '63 dark blue color?

          Irby,

Most any paint supplier has the ability to make and match any color you desire.

Also, Corvette America has vinyl paint in rattle cans.

Also, when you purchase get the cleaner to be used BEFORE you spray with the new color vinyl rattle can. There is a cleaner for vinyl and hard plastic, metal etc. The cleaner removes all the dirt and grease left by little hands and the vinyl paint sticks a whole lot better.

Looks like Sebring Silver with a Blue Vinyl interior. Nice combination.

Thanks Harry. I haven't seen the combination yet, lol. All I've seen is the nasty black dye. I did pull some trim off and saw the original dark blue and that looks really nice. Can't wait to have it restored to original color.
