    Mistery Relay?

Another question raised during the dismantling of the under dash area was this little relay encountered at the top of the left kick panel (behind the dash cluster). It seems like a relay to start the starter. I couldn't find it referenced in the latest judging manual. It does look original in appearance and how it is attached to the birdcage. Is this a normal item?

    greetings,
    Rob.

Rob, I believe that is the relay for your headlights. Check the electrical section of your AIM. Back to work! Bill

Rob, I'm not sure the circuit breaker is called out in the JG books as it's normally hidden behind the kick panel.

But, the attached copy from my '65 AIM, UPC-12, Sheet B4, details it in View B as item 12, 3828000, Breaker Assy. You should find a similar reference in your copy of the '63 AIM...

Believe me, it's original and you need it. As others have mentioned, it's the headlamp motor circuit breaker. It was originally GM #3827000. However, that part was NEVER available in SERVICE. The SERVICE part was always GM #4849850. Actually, I think that GM #3827000 is a Chevrolet part number for the exact same part. GM #4849850 looks like an old Guide or Fisher Body Division part number and, apparently, that's what GMSPO used for the SERVICE part since this piece had other than Chevrolet applications. I expect the parts would have been identical and, most likely, even the Chevrolet part carried the 4849850 part number or some derivative thereof. Or, less likely, the 4849850 carried the Chevrolet part number. Based on what I can see of it, I'd say it's the original piece.

By the way, the GM #489850 was discontinued without supercession in July, 1983. So, you don't want to need one. I don't know of any replacements or reproductions, although there may be one.

            Joe -

Long Island and Paragon have OEM-configuration replacements for that self-resetting 30-amp circuit breaker; one for '63-'66 and a different one for '67.

Jack -- I can't find any '65 reference in the TIM&JG, either. But then, neither is there mention of the circuit breaker for power window optioned cars, even though it's located in the same kickpanel area.

BTW, the headlight motor circuit breaker is not hidden at all by the kick panel carpet (at least in my two '65's).

Well, that's good news. Even though it's reproduction, maybe I'll pick one up for the collection; I currently don't have any.

                  Re: Mistery Relay?

I also had the inpression the relay was in a (difficult) visible area (but this was agfter removing the dash and dash cluster). That's why I asked about the location in the TIM&JG...
