    Expansion Tank Restoration

    I have a 1963 original expansion tank. I'm getting the overflow nipple reattached. My tank was painted silver by one of the previous owners.

    How do I safely remove the paint from this tank? Any recommended paint remover?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

    Since it is aluminum I would stay away from the typical caustic based strippers. Suggest soaking in a small metal pail of lacquer thinner for a day or so, and then use some very fine (000) steel wool or very mild scotch-bright pad. That should do it. Wear heavy-duty rubber gloves when scrubbing.....or have plenty of Cornhuskers available.

      Jerry;

      Who is reattaching your overflow? If they are experienced in working with aluminum, perhaps they would know best how to strip it. Be sure to check the heater hose system connection as well. As you know, original 63's are rolled in, not welded like all other C-2 years and are prone to working loose over time. My original sits in the box that a replacement from DeWitt's came in waiting to be re-rolled. I also had to replace my oil fill tube for the same reason. Perhaps someone with more 63"repair" experience can address these issues.

        I think that your major worry will be if the nipple can be reattached and not leak. Seriously oxidized aluminum, such as the inside of the tank probably is, is very hard to get clean enough to TIG weld.
