    63 convertible_ AC PS add

63 convertible not originally equipped with AC or power steering. In reassemblying the car, I added power steering, then decided to add AC also. What pulley changes will be required for this application. The AIM drawing of the AC set up (compressor on passenger side, alternator on the driver side) does not include the power steering pump.

    Steve,

On your 63 the power steering runs off a added third crankshaft pulley direct to power steering pump. The factory set up for A/C is alternator,W/P, crankshaft on first pulley next to water pump then A/C compressor along with W/P and crankshaft on second pulley.

Alternater is moved to drivers side for A/C

Thanks for the reply. I found the "add on" pulley for power steering in the CC catalog. But I'm going to have an alignment problem, because the forward groove on the crank pulley currently aligns with the PS pulley. With the new add on pulley, the PS pulley will have to be moved forward. Is this accomplished with a different PS pulley?

Yes. You probably currently have the cast iron, "drop-down" pulley of GM #3834720. If so, that will need to be replaced with the stamped steel, "pancake" style pulley of GM #3770509. Both pullies are GM-discontinued but available in reproduction.

I did not mention previously that the balancer is the 8" SHP. Does that change anything?.

No, that doesn't change anything. That's the balancer that any L-79 should have.

Chevrolet small block balancers are designed so that the dimension from the end of the "snout" on the hub (i.e. which seats on the timing sprocket or spacer) to the face of the hub (i.e. the pulley mounting surface) is the same for most balancers. So, whether you use a 6" OD X 3/4" thick balancer or an 8" OD X 1-11/16" thick balancer (like yours), the pulley alignment is unaffected. This is not 100% true in the case of all balancers and all pullies, but it's generally true and, in any event, it's true in your case.
