Steps to replace fan clutch

What are the step to remove and replace the fan clutch? I think all I need to do is use a large screw driver to prevent spinning and then remove 4 or 5 bolts. There is no need to remove the fan shroud, belts or other items. 69 427/390HP no A/C. Am I correct?

It will come off attached to the fan because it is bolted to the fan when the fan is removed. Depending on the year you're working on, the water pump will have studs into it or the bolts holding the fan and clutch will screw into the water pump hub which is behind the pulley. You don't have to touch the shroud.

My fan clutch is bad and I need to replace it. The current unit on the car is older after market unit. I'm getting a new GM replacement unit since I can't find a correct dated unit which would likely be too old to function properly anyway. I need to remove the old unit from the front of the fan housing and re-install the new unit.

I should clean my glasses more often, I read replace as replate.

Also, make sure you wrap a heavey cloth towel around one blade to hold it still to loosen the nuts/bolts.

I doubt you will need to use or want to use a screwdriver, too much chance of it slipping and causing damage.Especially if it's the liquid kind with ice and OJ.

The torque on the retaining nuts or bolts is quite low.
