    Vinyl Treatment/Protectant

Just bought a 57 with perfect original dashpad and doorpanels. Was going to use Black Magic to treat/protect it.
Is that as good as what is available, or is there something better?
    THANKS!!

    Re: Vinyl Treatment/Protectant

Mike, I use a mild vinyl cleaner (Meguiar's) very sparsley on my original '57 door panels, kick panels, dash pad, tabs, etc. I have only used Armor All a couple of times since 1964 on them. If the interior is not soiled I would just wipe it down once in awhile and not use a protectant on it. Stored indoors and out of the sun I don't believe it needs a protectant.

I'll do it. I love Maguires products.
      THANKS STEVE!

Pledge furniture polish - the "traditional" non-scented formulation.

It's basically an emulsion of carnuba wax in a volatile distillate. The wax seals up the pores and reduces outgassing, which causes vinyl to shrink and crank, and it leaves a nice non-slippery satin finish.

Don't use Armor-All on vinyl - rubber and some plastics only. It leaves vinyl slippery and greasy.

If the vinyl is dirty wash it first with a mild soap like Ivory liquid or car wash soap and light brushing with a fingernail scrub brush.

I bought new leather seat covers for my 68 Corvette from Al Knoch over 20 years ago. The recommended protectant by Al Knoch that came with the leather seat covers was Pledge. That is what I have used. Wish they still offered Pledge in the trigger pump container like they used to. I also use it on my other Corvettes.

            Duke,

Most (if not all) formulations of Pledge got rid of the wax in them many years ago. You have to hunt for a furniture "polish" that still has wax.

Pledge, thats funny; back in the mid 70's I used to use it on my 71 Cutlass "S" white vinyl interior. I don't know why but probably all I could find around the house and it worked great. Wish I still had that car.

I checked the spray can I have on hand, and there is no mention of carnuba wax - just lemon oil.

...got any recommendations on a spray polish that has carnuba? Anyone ever tried "instant detailer" on vinyl? I think it has some carnuba.

I've used 303 protectant for more years than I care to remember; it's the best "all in one" vinyl and plastic cleaner/conditioner I've ever tried. I hype this product to others whenever I have the opportunity!

Yeah pledge stopped using the wax a long time ago. If you go to the dollar general store and buy their brand of {PLEDGE} it is still like the original formula

3M vinyl cleaner and protectant is an excellent product. I have tried many over the years and really like this. Not greasy or too shiny. Gives a nice matte finish and keeps it clean.

I agree, tried over a year ago and wouldn't use anything else.

I'll second the 303 - great UV protection Does a great job on vinyl and tires.
Now I'm not sure if any wax is in the stuff to reduce the outgassing - so thanks to Duke I'll be off on another project.

Took a tour on the 303products site, found some good tech articles on the protection of the top coat -prevent plasticizer evaporation, ie outgassing, for the same reasons Duke outlined.
