    69 interior mirror replacement

I tried to remove the mirror from it's housing as per this thread: https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...irror&uid=4230
and didn't have much luck. The lower length of rubber remains quite stiff even after letting the mirror sit in the sink with hot water for 10 minutes or so.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to remove this glass?

Is it possible to remove the grey rubber strip from the stianless housing?

Yes, it's possible to remove the gray rubber perimeter seal from the stainless steel housing. I don't think you have the water hot enough and are not leaving it in the water long enough to soften it. I recommend SUSPENDING the mirror in a pan of water and keeping heat on the pan during the time that the mirror is suspended. Otherwise, the water starts to cool and is ineffective in softening the seal.

Hi Joe, I'll use my old soup pot on the stove then and suspend the mirror like you say. Can you recommend a temp? I was thinking maybe around 150f....

You should be able to go to the max without hurting anything. Of course, the max will be 212 degrees F. However, I always like to be conservative in these sort of things. So, start with it at 150 degrees for about 30 minutes. If that doesn't get it done, go up 25 degrees at a time.

Greg I Just Replaced The Glass In My 72 Mirror,i Dont Know If Its The Same As Your 69 But I Used A Heat Gun To Get The Rubber Soft The Mirror Came Out Easy. And Went Right Back In. If You Dont Have A Heat Gun Maybe A Hair Dryer.

I think a heat gun or high wattage hair dryer should work fine, too. However, I believe that most 1972's, except possibly very early cars, used a mirror with a black plastic housing. I think I'd be somewhat reluctant to get that very hot as it might distort. However, if that's the kind of mirror you have and you removed the rubber seal with a heat gun, the "proof is in the pudding".

I have used heat guns in the past and they are very unforgiving. Be very careful as control of the heat is predicated by btu's and distance from the object

                Re: 69 interior mirror replacement

Well I used the hot water trick on the stove and it worked really good to soften the rubber. It was still a beach to get it out though because it is glued to the rubber backing. I had to carefully cut it away from the backing with a utility knife in the end. Anyways I have it out and still have all my fingers.
Now my problem is that I took it to a glass place to get resilvered and he looked at me like I was lost in the seventies and said that there were only about 3 people that ever did that in Calgary and he was the last one to do it before he sold his equipment which was about 20 years ago. He said that IF I could find someone to do this that it probably would be cost prohibitive...

He did give me the option of going to a wrecker and finding a slightly larger mirror and he would cut it down to match my original for $10. I guess this would work as long as the "new" one is the same thickness and taper so that it fits in the rubber as well as the original one did.

So right now this is my only option short of buying a repop mirror assy but to be honest I have had hit and miss success with repop parts so I'd rather not go there unless there is a quality repop out there.

Does anyone know of a quality repop 69 mirror assy or just the mirror out there or should I just go the wrecker, find one and have it ground down to fit?

                  Greg:
Paragon sells the mirror glass alone -part # 2555 $40 (see page 138 in their latest catalog). I have used it and it fits perfectly.

Thanks Jeff, so it is available.

I'll check with some of the other vendors first as Paragon's shipping policy to Canada is such that it ends up costing 2-3 times more for shipping and brokerage fees than any of the other vendors that I've used in the past.
