    69 Luggage Rack Removal & Re-attach

If I fully remove my luggage to polish and wax the rear deck; will the rack simply reattach or are there some nuts at the bottom of the screws that may fall or other issues creating reattachment issues?

    Thanks,

    Don

Well - yes and MAYBE no

There are six rubber well nuts that go through the rear panel. These well nuts have a brass nut inside the rubber and when you tighten the screw into the well nut, it pulls up the brass nut, allowing the rack to snug up to the rear panel.

Sometimes - the brass nut may act up when re-securing the rack down.
If the rack is an old installation, you may have some issues, otherwise it should not be a big deal to get back on.

They should not fall out through the bottom, unless you put lots of downward pressure on them.

I did this same thing to my car (wax rear deck) and I had no issues, my rack has only been on the car for 1 year.

The biggest trick is setting the chrome stands under the rack and over the rubber/chrome washer and getting the screws all back in the holes.
best to tackle this with a buddy on hand

    Good luck.

PS: the entire mounting kit can be purchased new from most any of the BIG Vette part houses.

      Hi Don,
Bills info is right on. If I may, I'd only add that if you have a problem you may JUST be able to reach up from under the car to reach a well nut that may be turning. If you're lucky enough to have side-exaust the route is a bit easier. Good Luck!

You can wax and polish your rear deck ten times over in the same amount of time it will take to remove and replace your rack- even if all goes well with the attaching hardware.
