    63 vin plate

My April built 63 has a welded vin plate and I have always though that all 63s had this. I'm looking at another very early car whose vin plate is riveted. Anybody know if it was possible for any very early 63's vin plate to be attached with rivets at St Louis?

I once owned S/N 1327, and it was welded. Are the rivets small or large, totally round or serrated? Picture would help.

The VIN plate on my Jan built 63 is welded. The only way I've ever seen a 63 plate.

Hi Mike sometimes you will find them riveted because the plates have falling off,(quick fix to pot rivet) the welds didnt hold very well on some of them, thats why you sometimes see them spot welded two or three times on each side. esp if the dealer stamped date of delivery on the plate, it could loosen it up. Any evidence of a prior weld and then a rivet ? You can usually tell where the welds were on the "z" bar and the vin tag, itself.

Here's a poor photo of the rivet. It doesn't look like a scaloped rivet, but, I'll haveto get a better look. I'll also check for failed welding attempts, etc. The vin tag also seems to be closer to the trim tag than I've seen.

                Thanks, Mike

                  Re: 63 vin plate

All the 63 VIN tags I've seen have been spot welded, once, sometimes twice on each end.

I've never seen a 63 that had the VIN tag RIVETED on ORIGINALLY.

Now, if it fell off......a previous owner could have pop riveted it back on, or...............could be something else, like a changed VIN plate.

I hate for you to go here, but if the car is one you want to buy, you might check the vin number on the frame to make sure they are the same.

I think you're right, Jim....that could be an issue

This car is probably worth a little research, but, I don't want to get involved in anything with a questionable vin. I had intended to restore it, so if its a real car, not a vin switch, what affect would somethig like a vin attachment issue have on the car in judging?
