    c-3 jack storage protector #391857

While cleaning out the 70 jack storage compartment, I see a pressed fiberboard construction item that appears to go on the end of jack for anti-raddle storage. This item with part # 391857 has a spot of glue on it, probably glued from factory. I searched arcives and my personal library of info., sales catalog, and have found nothing. It is illregular shaped measures 4 1/2" x 5 1/2". Has anyone seen this before?

Steven. The number you posted is a casting number. That will make it difficult to impossible to track down. Here are your pictures:

Terry, The rear view pic. has a lot of #'s, may need to enlarge to see them, The largest set of #'s is 48474 the others are placed at random. With the pics., maybe someone can add to its identification. Steve

          Hi Stephen,
My parts book calls it out as... 68-72 "underbody storage compt. filler".
I've never seen (or maybe noticed) one.
          NICE!
          Regards,
          Alan

PS: The group that it's in leads me to think it was a part used in the construction of the under body. The other parts are things like fillers, bonding strips, and closing pieces.

Alan, I think you are right on it, I am sure it was glued from factory and got knocked loose in the past. The jack slides into this probably as a protector. This is the first I have seen also, maybe a 69 item since this is an early 70. Steve

Part of the problem here is that the part number was reported incorrectly. From the photo, the number is clearly 3918571 and NOT 391857. Believe me, there can be a BIG difference between 2 part numbers. As it turns out, though, this is a finished part number and not just a casting or other identification number. Also, I believe the material was reported incorrectly in the initial post. This part is of PVC plastic construction and not fiberboard.

Anyway, as Alan has mentioned, the part is the underbody compartment filler panel and was used from 1968 through 1976. You will find it in UPC 1 of the AIM and ABOUT sheet B3, depending upon year model.

Steve, I didn't re-size the pictures. I just downloaded them to my computer and then posted them to the thread. I don't claim to know a lot about posting photos to this site. I see there is a way to get them larger, but I don't know how to do it.

                    Hi Steven,
Now I'm curious...is the filler you have the one that was or should have been glued in place as shown on B-3 (thanks Joe) or was it an extra that found it's way into your car?
                    Regards,
                    Alan

Alan, The item I am naming filler has been in car for 32 years or as long as I have owned car. When I remove tray I may be able to get a better idea about its originality and fit. I ordered a 70 aim book since I have not located the item in my current reference books, and I looked at my 71 +72 and none exist, so, I am still in the dark at this point. Steve

O.K. I found the filler in a 71 assembly manual. The filler goes to the rear of park brake console in storage area, and has nothing to do with jack storage, it just got placed there after it was found in the past. Steve

                          Hi Steven,
I'm still wondering... does your car have a filler in place?
You can feel it if you have long fingers or push a screwdriver through from the battery compartment or jack compartment to feel for it.
Wouldn't it be great if it was the original, hadn't gotten bonded, and it fell out?
As you see, VERY SMALL things excite me these days.
                          Regards,
                          Alan

Alan, I can put my fingers from battery to jack compartments, so that is where it goes, it fell in jack compartment. I do like your rechecking things like this, now I know what happened in past years. I will have a lot of future questions, I like complete details as well. Thanks, steve
