    Metal Blackening Kit

    Happy New Year All!

Just recieved my Eastwood metal blackening kit this morning and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this kit and if there's any pointers or tips you could pass along. Thanks.

I use it all the time. make sure there is absolutely no rust left during your prep stages, or it will come back to haunt you. I wire wheel all bolts, nuts or whatever, then soak in lacquer thinner or xylene, dry, back to the wheel one more quick time, dip parts in alcohol, dry them, then in blacking solution, stirring them with a wooden tongue depressor till i get desired black coverage( usually 2 min.) I have the first issue kit that came with a penetrating liquid sealer that gets applied by a dunk, and left to dry at room temp for at least 24 hrs. dont know if the kit still comes with sealer?
    very happy with results.
you may want to soak parts in rust remover, Eastwood sells a good one
this may sound like a lot of work or a PITA but you get out of it what you put in.

      Hi Martin,
I've had good success with the kit, too. I use gloves when ever touching the part before the dip. Oil from one's finger tips really seems to affect the results.

        ALAN-

Thanks for the tip, I was wondering how the metal would react if I touched it with my OILY fingers.

Did you decide or get a camera yet? I'm loving my OLYMPUS!
