    69 Vacuum Relay Screws

Could someone describe the screws that attaches the vacuum relay (headlamp doors) to the support at front of the car (1969)? The AIM indicates that the two screws are a different part number than the two screws that attach the vacuum relay located near the firewall. Nevertheless, I have tried one of the firewall real screws and it did not turn in - did not put too much torque on the screw since I did not want to damage anything. Could be I need to retap the holes to clean, but am not sure of the dimensions. Any info?

    Thanks,

    Craig

I don't see where the AIM specifies two different screws. I see only one screw specified. That implies the other screw is the same. Plus, I see no reason that it would be different. IF there were a difference, the MOST I would expect is a small difference in length.

Craig, if they are the same screw used in 70, they are #8 sheet metal screws, 3/8" long, with plain (no headstamp) indented hex heads, finished in black phosphate.

Some clarification is probably in order to make sure I didn't misunderstand the question...as I recall (don't have my AIM) the 70 relays are attached to sheet metal brackets or plates that mount behind the grilles. The screw described is actually the ones that attach the sheet metal brackets.

You can not really "chase" the threads made by a self tapping sheet metal screw...what you see is what you get. If someone has replaced the sheet metal screws with a larger size, say #10, you are pretty much out of luck without welding or some other means to reduce the hole size. You may be able to tighten a worn hole by flattening the sheet metal around the hole (the sheet metal is deformed when threads are formed). You may be able to get a little more grip that way if the hole is not enlarged too much.

Chuck, I believe the screw is the same for 69 and 70, but Craig has a 69 which does not have the plate and also has only one relay not two like the 70. I believe the 69 relay screws into the header bar.

In 1969 the headlight actuator relay went from one relay to two about the beginning of October.

Ok I dug up another one.

68-69's for the most part used a 10-24 thread bolt that had a 5/16" recessed hex head and a captured extrenally toothed star washer. Headmarkins were RBW, B&H, L and a few more. This is the same bolt that was used to hold the Back Up light switch to the bracket that was mounted to the transmission on muncies. I have seen 1 or 2 with the #8 thread screw but the 10-24 bolt was the norm.
