    Powerglide Tailshaft Identification

I have this part with #3987988 that measures 11 7/16" long. Can anyone help me identify this part?

    Thanks

As far as Corvettes go, it's a SERVICE extension housing for 1965-67 with Powerglide and replaced the original housing, GM #3864431, in September, 1972. It's also applicable to many other Chevrolets with Powerglide during the 1962-73 period.

      Joe,

Thanks for the feedback. Please explain what a SERVICE part is? Also, does your response mean that it can be used in the 1965-1967 Corvette Powerglide?

A SERVICE part is a part obtained to replace a part that was originally installed on the car. Parts originally installed on the car are called PRODUCTION parts. In many cases, the SERVICE part is identical to the PRODUCTION part, especially if it's obtained from GM very early in the car's life. In this case, the part is of a different part number than was originally used on 1965-67 Corvettes with Powerglide. So, as far as 65-67 Corvettes are concerned, this part is a SERVICE-only piece; it was never used in PRODUCTION for those cars. However, it may well be a PRODUCTION part for any 70-73 Chevrolets equipped with Powerglide.
