    1966 Master Cylinder Replacement

As I install new brakes on my '66, i am faced with the decision of what to do with the master cylinder. It must be replaced and, while talking with several friends, have generally been advised to go with a dual master cylinder conversion kit. While I want to keep my car as original as possible, I understand the logic in their argument. However, the thought of changing the single feed master cylinder from the factory doesn't sit well with me. I would appreciate hearing the thoughts and wisdom of those who have been in the same situation or have some experience regarding the dual master cylinder system conversion kit.

    Thanks,

    Dave

There's no question that a dual master cylinder system provides more safety than a single master cylinder. However, that doesn't mean that single master cylinder system is unsafe. If it were me, I don't think I'd make this conversion. I'd just make sure that my braking system was in good condition "all the way around". Also, make sure that your parking/EMERGENCY brake system is in good working to give you SOME stopping power just in case things do go wrong.

      Re: 1966 Master Cylinder Replacement

      David,
I am switching to power brakes on my 66 so I could have a dual master cylinder. I went the correct parts route and it has taken several years to find an original booster (part number and date) and master cylinder. I got it from a friend but it turned out to be a 65, but Jill at Dr Vette swaped for a 66 when she rebuilt it.
I never had a problem with stopping due to my original MC, in fact the car stopped pretty good And if you have ever been on a road tour with Jimmy Gregg and the Carolina's chapter that is saying something.
I think joe gave good advice - There are a lot of non power brake mid-year and solid axle cars out there on the road with a single MC
