    1966 hubcap preparation for painting

I am getting ready to paint my 1966 hubcaps. Several of the painted areas have paint that has chipped off leaving the chrome finish showing through. I am using the Seymour Alumi-Match medium bronze paint (Part number 16-50). What suggestions do you have for prepping the surface before painting?

    Thanks,

    Dave

i mask them off and glass bead them, then remask and paint, black vinyl electrical tape seems to work well, good luck

I used chemical stipper, Rock Miracle or something like that then washed, masked and painted with spray paint I got from LI Corvette

There was an article on restoring 65-66 wheelcovers in the Spring '95 issue of The Restorer. I don't have it, but you may be able to get it from someone.

          Dave,
I had mine professionally polished. When I got them back, I recreated the texture in the painted areas using Rustoleum dark pewter textured paint (#7221). Since the edges between the polished and painted surfaces were fuzzy from the factory, I liberally sanded the side of a roll of masking tape with 36 grit paper and used it to recreate the fuzzy edge. The masking is tedious, but if you carefully peel the mask off of one hubcap, you can reuse it for at least another. After the Rustoleum, I used Long Island gray 65-6 hub cap paint (#45-25). The hubcaps look pretty good to me, but haven't been judged yet.
          Good luck!
          Jeff
