Re: JL re GM# 379978
GM #379978 was never a finished part that was available in SERVICE. However, it may have been a PRODUCTION-only piece or it may be a component of piece used in PRODUCTION and available in SERVICE under another part number, depending upon where you're finding this number.
From what I can tell, it's related to the console cover used for 1977 to 1981 Corvettes. The unpainted cover was GM #379981 and that's the only piece ever available in SERVICE. GM #379978 MAY have been a part number for one of the painted covers used in PRODUCTION. If so, though, that number would not have appeared on the part in any sort of embossed fashion. If it's a paper label, that's a different story. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: JL re GM# 379978
Tom,
If that number is embossed in the plastic it is the same as a casting number. I guess it might even be called a casting number. Casting numbers (whether the part is metal or plastic) almost never are the same as the finished part number because usually there is some kind of finishing or machining operation that is done to the basic casting. That subsequent operation then changes the casting number into the part number.Terry- Top

Tom-----
I agree with Terry. The embossed number represents something other than a finished part number. I'd be extremely surprised if it, in any way, related to the color of the piece.
Is the GM #379981 still available in SERVICE? YES, it is. It's about 30 bucks, GM list. PAINT AS REQUIRED.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
