    63 Master Cylinder question

I have a non-original master cylinder on my 63. There is a supposedly original one on Ebay, but it has a silver cap, when most 63's I've seen have a yellow color. I looked it up in the Judging Guide and it says the cap should be cadmium plated. Most cad plates are silver (although some are yellow chromated), so now I'm confused. Please help.

Hi Mike The cap for 63 MC is cad plate. The gold color is not correct. This is called gold irridite or irridate however is not correct. Regards Jim Lucia

        Re: 63 Master Cylinder question

Besides the coloring, does the cap have the bail or thumb screw? Usually, the "gold" colored caps are the 64 with the bail wire hold down. Every 63 with the thumb screw I've seen are silver or cad plated. My original 63 was stolen in 92 and replaced with a 64 unit. It took me until 2006 to find a correctly dated 63 replacement, so Good Luck!

          Re: 63 Master Cylinder question

Hang on. As I read the posts it sounds as if your describing a 64 then in other posts it sounds like a 63. The 63 MC was a one year only part. It either had a thumb screw or a hex head bolt to hold the cover on. The thumb screw was changed to a hex head bolt for Power Brake cars. The Power Booster raised the position of the MC too high and the lower profile hex head bolt was introduced.

Since the 63 MC was a one year only part, the typical price for a used ( needs to be rebuilt ) non-P/B MC is about $350.00. A P/B MC is even higher.

Don't worry about the color of the cap as that is not the price driver.

Why not post a picture or a link to the auction you are looking at???

The vehicle is a non-power brake 1963. The Ebay item is 280296521226, its up to $300. Thanks,

              I haven't done this before, so here's a pic, I think.

                Michael,
That looks like the real deal to me, the complete M/C is glass beaded and the 7/8 is in the cast. Pass cars used the same except with 1" bore.

When I rebuilt the one for my 63 it was sleeved with brass and has held up very well.

What is the date code? It's one thing to find a real 63 MC and another to find one within an acceptable date code range. As I said, it took me a long time (and money).

The date code is A9-3, which I believe is Jan 9, 1963. My car is about April 24 build date, so I think this is probably OK. What do you think?

I was told a 3 to 4 month B4 range on MC's is reasonable. Perhaps someone more famiar with the judging critera on these can comment. Sounds good. I have not checked the item as yet on E-Bay. Is it already rebuilt or must it still be done? I had bought one on E-Bay originally that needed rebuilding, and the date was late 62, so I traded it in to Lonestar here at a winter meet for one already sleeved etc. and a closer date, and did the whole deal for about 3 bills a few years back.

The A93 is fine. I have an A53 in an April 20th car with P/B.

Thanks guys. According to the listing, it still needs rebuilding. Since I posted, it has already increased in price, but, if it doesn't get too high, maybe I'll buy it. If necessary, I can probably trade for a rebuilt one at the Florida meet.

Sounds like a plan. See you here in a couple weeks.
