    Tie rod clamp finishes

Does anyone know the finish for the tie rod clamps? I've searched the TIMJG and the forums but havn't found anything.

    Thanks.

Also, Does anyone know the finish for the hardware to hold the power steering support bracket to the frame?

    Thanks,
    Mike

On mid years I find originals had no plating on the clamps, just bare steel. But the entire assembly as delivered to GM was covered in sticky black goo, maybe paint. Coverage is random some a lot and some not good coverage at all on the tie rod ends and clamps. Clamp bolts were black in color maybe black oxide or phosphate. And were high grade bolts, 5 lines.

The bolts that retain the power steering cylinder bracket to the frame were part of the REINFORCEMENT assemblies. I believe the bolts were phosphate-finished or natural (phosphate finish and "natural" finish often look the same in the NEW condition, but the natural finish rusts much more rapidly).

The nut and lockwasher were "natural" finish. The nut was of GM-280M material (SAE grade 5).
